Overseas signings hope to achieve Vaas improvement

By Barmy Kev and Ged

The worst kept secret of Murali Kartik signing for Middx has been confirmed as an official. Last month Charminda Vaas was signed up. Barmy Kev and Ged Ladd do brief assessments on 2 quality International and 1st class performers. Charminda Vaas

Charminda Vaas

Vaas has served Sri Lanka over 94 tests and 284 ODIs . He also played county cricket for Worcester.A left arm fast medium bowler and an attacking late order batsman that puts him in all rounder category. So what are his vital statistics?

Geds Analysis the term superstar comes to mind when you look at his international record: over 300 wickets at sub 30 averages in both forms of the game. His first class figures are very good too (although his county stints have not so far been exceptional). He plays well at Lords and Id expect him to use the slope well and add variety to the strike attack with his left arm swing bowling. He can hold a bat too; 1st class average above 20, same at Test level.

At one time I thought that WPUJC Vass, or Warnakulasuriya Patabendige Ushantha Joseph Chaminda Vaas if you want to be formal about it, was the longest name in 1st class cricket. How wrong I was.Wed need to sign another Sri Lankan 1st class player for that: ARRAPWRRKB Amunugama.Or to be more precise, Amunugama Rajapakse Rajakaruna Abeykoon Panditha Wasalamudiyanse Ralahamilage Rajitha Krishantha Bandara Amunugama. But I digress.

Barmy Kevs View- His career record shows him as a world-class bowler and a more than useful bat. His strike rate and bowling economy is impressive. His county championship performances are respectable without being outstanding. I followed the 2001 tour to Sri Lanka where Charminda carried the SL seam attack single handedly- familiar story?Lets hope at 32 and a long distinguished career at highest level, his motivation is still high, as potentially this could be a superb signing.

Murali Kartik

Described as a spinner in the classical mould, Kartik has been on the fringes of the India test team for a while and has regularly been understudy to Kumble and Harbhajan. In his 8 test and 30 ODIs has been an impressive performer.

Geds analysis superb 1st class stats, bowling average of 25 and strike rate just above 60 is exceptional. His List A figures are stand out too.But bear in mind that most of those were achieved in the Indian subcontinent.Having said that, Murali Kartik has the reputation for being able to do what he does on more or less any wicket, which must be good news for us!He certainly has found it harder at International level, but I think he should take plenty of wickets and win matches for us at 1st class/List A level.

I have always found his wispy attempts at facial hair a little disconcerting, but perhaps he does this precisely to disconcert the batsmen.Im digressing again.

Barmy Kevs view- While his career record does not stand out as outstanding his reputation does. He has produced manymatch winning performances. Has over 2 seasons played for Lancashire for a short period, but not enough times to produce meaningful data, but worth mentioning he took 10 wickets on debut.Lets hope the Lords wickets and ICB are helpful in allowing us to benefit from a quality spinner.
