Match of the Year 2009

6 September 09

By Hackney Shire feat. Ged
December 31 2009

2009 was not a great year for Middlesex CCC cricketwise, but we certainly had a truly great match on 6 September 2009 from an MTWD point of view. Here is a mostly picture-editorial on the wedding of Barmy Kev to Olivia. The pictures are by Hackney Shire, the words mostly by Ged.

Pre Match Nerves?

Wedding 01

Posh Margaret offers Barmy Kev some sage advice and a cuppa ahead of the big match.

Wedding 03

The cuppa has gone down and Kev looks a whole lot calmer.  Hold on, isn't that a large brandy next to the cuppa?

Wddding 05

Hackney Shire and Dasher Denning support Kev in his hour of need, when the legs go all wobbly.  Must have been that large brandy.

The Wedding Ceremony Itself

No photos were allowed, so we can only report that the ceremony was charming.  The Registar bowled Kev a wrong'un by pronouncing his surname incorrectly.  Kev had the presence of mind to correct the Registrar, otherwise it is quite possible that the whole marriage would be null and void, which would be a bit of a pity having gone to all that trouble to hold the event.

Wedding 09

The newlyweds, naturally, catch up on the ODI score.  Here's that (unfortunate) match report: http://www.cricinfo.com/engvaus2009/engine/match/350044.html

Lunch

The run rate improved immensely once the ceremony itself was over.

Wedding 10

The fizz was there for all to see.

Wedding 12

The other type of fizz for Posh Margaret

Wedding 13

Shrek's always been a bit of a card.

Tea Interval

As is traditional, the speech-making took place during the tea interval.  The most amusing item in any speech was unintentional and during Barmy Kev's speech (of course).  He started to tell an anecdote about Mabel, his mother-in law, got about half way through his run-up and then realised that Mabel had actually nipped out during his speech.  He quickly changed tack, talked about something else and then restarted the anecdote once Mabel returned, to the largest round of applause of the day!

Wedding 15

What would Jonners, Aggers and Blowers have to say about this cake?

Wedding 20

Groovy - Chris Hollins (at one time of Middlesex CCC of course) and Ola Jordan? [ed - please check - not sure exactly who is who in these dancing pics]

Wedding 24

Plenty of match photographers

Wedding 27

Just dig those moves - Mark Ramprakash and Karen Hardy?  [ed - please check - not sure exactly who is who in these dancing pics]

Stumps

Suffice it to say that a tremendously good time was had by all.  Middlesex CCC didn't have much of a season, but from an MTWD point of view we certainly had a great match to remember in 2009.

Many congratulations once again to Kev and Olivia.

And a very Happy New Year to all our readers!!

Ah, the Sportnetwork server which holds all the photos appears to be down this morning, which affects all the pictures across the network and rather prevents this picture editorial from working until the pictures come back up.

I would report it on the moderators bulletin board, except.......

....that bulletin board is also down; it is on the same server as the pictures!!

Hopefully someone at Sportnetwork will wake up and fix the problem some time soon. In the meantime, apologies, and do pop back to see the pictures once they return.

Thanks Ged for our match report. Made good reading for both of us for New Year's (ouch my head) day.

Yes Mabel doing a tactical during my speech did stump me. I didn't get much sympathy when I proposed to talk about the love of my life- Middlesex CCC and QPR, although this proved to be shortest part of speech.

It was lovely that we received a signed card from Middlesex CCC and presented on day.

Olivia has agreed to go on trip to Holland. A good test for our marriage.

When my parents got married, my dad wrote to the club asking about the possibility of any of the players being able to attend. Unfortunately, they said this was not possible as the wedding took place on the rest day of a County Championship match at Canterbury (the John Player League campaign had finished a week previously). Instead, the club sent him a signed bat.

However, looking at the scorecard of the match, the players would have been able to attend the wedding after all as there were just 27 overs on day 1, no play on day 2 and 3 overs on day 3, and only three players got a bat. Must have been a bit of rain about.

I am surprised that with the trip to Holland less than four months away we still don't know the exact venue for the match.

I think you might have a few Quins RFU fans giving you earache about the RL team being confused with them , they have been at The Stoop (the RL team) about as long as you have and will probably last not much longer than most of our other "tenents " , London Scottish , the Broncs et al.

Sorry JW "touch rugby" is not my scene , must be a Northern thing .

Many congrats to Barmy Kev & Olivia.

Is that a joke - Chris Hollins of Middlesex CCC?!? He never played for Middlesex?!?!

I remember that on the first night of Strictly, my parents asked me a question about Chris Hollins, so I looked at his Wikipedia profile and received a surprise when I saw tables of a cricket and football career.

He played eight first-class matches for Oxford University in 1994, and can boast an innings of 131 in the Varsity match at Lord's, 76 v Worcestershire, 68 v Leicestershire and 4-64 v Nottinghamshire.

He also played 18 times, scoring one goal, for Aldershot Town FC in 1994/95, when according to a little-publicised yet reliable website called Football Club History Database the club played in Isthmian League Division One.
