The Low Road by Bruce Norris, Royal Court Theatre, 23 March 2013

Gosh, this one didn’t really work for us, although we thought it would. We like Bruce Norris’s plays and the Royal Court was serving up a stellar collection of cast and creatives. Here is a link to the Royal Court resource for this production. To some extent we were unlucky – we’d booked an early … Continue reading “The Low Road by Bruce Norris, Royal Court Theatre, 23 March 2013”

Clybourne Park by Bruce Norris, Royal Court Theatre, 4 September 2010

I was really taken with this play and production by the excellent Bruce Norris, about racial tension in a Chicago neighbourhood across the generations. It is witty and thought provoking in equal measure, tackling difficult topics with clarity and sensitivity. Superb cast and this style of play marries well with Dominic Cooke’s style of direction. … Continue reading “Clybourne Park by Bruce Norris, Royal Court Theatre, 4 September 2010”

The Pain and the Itch, Bruce Norris, Royal Court Theatre, 22 June 2007

We really enjoyed this play.  I think it was the first Bruce Norris play we saw and it certainly motivated us to look out for his plays. We were due to see it on Saturday 23 June, but then realised that the only Saturday that made sense for a Worm family birthday celebration was that … Continue reading “The Pain and the Itch, Bruce Norris, Royal Court Theatre, 22 June 2007”

White Guy On The Bus by Bruce Graham, Finborough Theatre, 6 April 2018

We’ve mostly been very impressed by the stuff we’ve seen at the Finborough Theatre. We started trying the Finborough less than a year ago and this piece, White Guy On The Bus, was our tenth visit in that short time. Again we were most impressed. We thought we must have seen US playwright Bruce Graham’s … Continue reading “White Guy On The Bus by Bruce Graham, Finborough Theatre, 6 April 2018”

The Invisible Hand by Ayad Akhtar, Tricycle Theatre, 14 May 2016

Wow. Last week, Janie and I were trying to figure out when we had booked this piece and why. The rubric just didn’t sound like our sort of thing: “thriller…American banker…a cell in rural Pakistan…every second counts…” We even wondered whether we’d booked it by accident. Then it started to dawn on me, slowly. Back … Continue reading “The Invisible Hand by Ayad Akhtar, Tricycle Theatre, 14 May 2016”

Detroit by Lisa D’Amour, Cottesloe Theatre, 12 May 2012

I remember we were really looking forward to this play/production. Transfers from the Steppenwolf Theatre Company in the US are usually top notch, as are Cottesloe productions. In many ways this was top notch; a well written, well-acted, well-directed piece about suburban America. It just didn’t really light up. Perhaps we had been spoilt too … Continue reading “Detroit by Lisa D’Amour, Cottesloe Theatre, 12 May 2012”
