Did I Mention That I Had A Cold? Also Knuckling Down To 4th Year Alleyn’s School Life Plus Jewish Holidays With The Bolingbroke Community, Family & Friends, Late September To Early October 1976

A Mix Cassette Tape, “Edward’s Stuff”, now replicated on YouTube Music – click here

Monday 20 September 1976 – Getting cold. TV Some Mothers [Do ‘Ave ‘Em], George and Mildred.

Tuesday 21 September 1976 – V.S.O. v good. Got cold. TV Dick Emery, Mastermind.

Wednesday 22 September 1976 – Cold, bad. CCF good. TV Carry on Jack.

Thursday 23 September 1976 – Cold still. Photographic soc. v good. TV Frankie Howerd.

Friday 24 September 1976 – Still got cold. TV It’s a Knockout, The Good Life.

I wonder if I let all of my schoolmates know that I had a cold that week. I certainly made sure that my diary recorded that matter every single day. I suspect I was just a tiny bit insufferable when I had a cold.

Saturday 25 September 1976 – Rosh [Hashana, Jewish New Year]: stayed at home editing. TV Duchess of Duke Street, Sweepstakes, Two Ronnies.

I’m sure the only reason I stayed at home was to spare the elderly folk at the shul (synagogue) my germs. Nothing to do with finding shul dull or the fact that I wanted to edit our family cine film ahead of a planned screening at the Levinson’s house the next day.

Sunday 26 September 1976 – Rosh: Shul. Slap up tea: films with Levinsons TV Clouseau (?)

Shul for us would have been South-West London Synagogue in Bolingbroke Grove – click here for a lovely blog piece about the place – now long-since gone. And hurrah – I was well enough by the Sunday not only to attend but also to partake of slap-up tea and a film premier of our 1976 Harris Family epic movie.

Not seen it? Well here’s your chance now, 50 years later:

A couple of scenes from that movie, not least one I shot around the 12’30” mark, Dad slapping on the sun tan oil, was chosen for use in a Visa commercial some 40 years later, which earnt me a few bob. Who’d have imagined that when we premiered the film in Woodfield Avenue in 1976.

Makes up for all that modelling I did as a kid for no monetary reward

Monday 27 September 1976 – All OK, nice day. TV Some Mothers [Do ‘Ave ‘Em], George + Mildred.

Tuesday 28 September 1976 – VSO great. TV Planet Earth, Mastermind.

Wednesday 29 September 1976 – CCF good. TV Carry on Teaching.

Thursday 30 September 1976 – Delivered pamphlets. [Cousin] Edward and Susan for dinner: tape.

My mother always referred to my cousins Ted & Sue Marcus as Edward and Susan, as did I, until liberated from my mother’s nominative clutches decades later.

Ted & Sue’s wedding a few year’s earlier. Angelic-looking page boy to the right of Sue

Here’s another link to the mix tape (now playlist) that Ted kindly made for me and brought to our house that day. If you are into sixties R&B, it’s for you. I still have the cassette…somewhere.

Friday 1 October 1976 – All OK today. TV It’s a Knockout Grand Final, G Blast (?)

Saturday 2 October 1976 – Graham came afternoon. TV Two Ronnies.

Sunday 3 October 1976 – Kol Nidre, evening all OK.

Monday 4 October 1976 – YOM KIPPUR. Broke fast at Benjamins.

In those days I actually would have taken a day off school and fasted on Yom Kippur, having relatively recently “qualified” to fast. I kept my dad company in the matter of fasting for more than a decade, if I recall correctly, despite not really having my heart in it.

Fortitudinous stuff, fasting. especially in those circumstances. Did I mention that I had a cold in late September that year?

“But what of the cartoon film that you and Graham Majin were making?”, I hear anxious readers cry. The reason for the hold up and the next steps in the film production process will be explained in the next exciting episode.
