Fun

That was my single word review of this one.

We’d been having a fun few weeks, it seems from the diary. Boating with family and friends late July…

…followed by, based on diaries:

  • 9 August – lunch with Mum & Dad (did Charlie & Phillie join us for that? Janie’s diary suggest they might well have done);
  • 15 August, Andrea’s party;
  • 22 August – BBQ at Elisabeth & Michael’s place (following, in my case, Bridge at Henry’s the night before);
  • 30 August – Kim & Micky’s party (bank holiday Sunday evening – a late one if I recall correctly).

So this theatrical interlude of fun must have been…fun.

Nick Curtis in the Standard absolutely hated it:

A Weekend Including The Arrival of Nobby, Cause Célèbre by Terence Rattigan, Lyric Hammersmith, A Drive Out To Mainelli-land On The Sunday & Finally Unwanted News On Our Return Home, 7 & 8 February 1998

A memorable weekend in all sorts of ways, this one – good and bad.

The weekend started with me collecting Nobby, my souped-down Honda CRX. I don’t often buy cars, so this was a big day.

Then Cause Célèbre at the Lyric, which I simply rated “good”.

It didn’t get much press. Here’s a snippet from the Sunday Telegraph:

I’ve never been a huge fan of Rattigan and I recall that this play/production didn’t really change my view.

On the Sunday, somewhat on a whim I seem to recall, the Mainelli’s invited us over to their place as they had several people already scheduled to visit and they wanted a butchers at my new motor.

My abiding memory of that visit was how cold it was that day, but the assembled throng (especially Rupert Stubbs) insisted that we remove the roof of the car and drive off demonstrating the open-toppedness of the thing.

When we got home, while we were eating a camembert salad supper, Janie’s twin sister Philippa called to let us know the bad news that she had been diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer. That news dampened our mood considerably and turned our world upside down for quite a while.

The Milk Train Doesn’t Stop Here Anymore by Tennessee Williams, Lyric Hammersmith, 29 November 1997

I wrote the following in my log around the time:

Unusual production; worked in many but not all respects.

Originally done at Citizens Theatre, Glasgow in October 1994.

This play is not, in my view, top notch Tennessee Williams, so there was possibly only so much that could be done with it. Philip Prowse did his best as director. Rupert Everett flamboyantly and memorably played the role of Flora Goforth.

Like us, Nicholas de Jongh was impressed by the performances but not 100% sure about the play in The Standard:

Out Cry by Tennessee Williams, Lyric Hammersmith, 16 May 1997

This Cheek By Jowl production started at the Everyman in Cheltenham and Northcott Exeter before switching to the Lyric Hammersmith. Janie and I rated this one very good. We must have been very keen to see it as we went to the penultimate performance on a Friday evening (on a weekend when we also went to The Orange Tree on the Saturday), which even for us was a bit excessive.

We are especially partial to Tennessee Williams; while this play is not “major Williams” it was still a gripping theatrical event for us.

Paul Taylor in The Independent was impressed.

It certainly went down well in the West Country before it came to London.

Faust by Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe, Lyric Hammersmith, 11 & 18 May 1988

This was a rare opportunity to see Goethe’s Faust in all of its glory – not only the better known Part One but also Part Two.

Bobbie and I saw it over two Wednesday evenings – these were late midweek nights I seem to remember, but I also recall that it was very much worth it.

Simon Callow played Faust. Paul Brightwell played Wagner. Andy Serkis, Linda Kerr Scott, Caroline Bliss…it was quite a cast and crew. Here is the Theatricalia entry.

My log for both evenings reads “very good indeed”.

I do recall that Part One made more sense to me than the ethereal, impressionistic Part Two. But both parts were very entertaining and well worth seeing.
